Frequently Asked Questions

Referrals, insurance, what to bring, how long a session runs, and how you will know when you are done.

The two questions everyone asks first.

Do I need a doctor's referral? No. Utah has direct access to physical therapy, so you can see a licensed physical therapist without a referral and start treatment right away instead of waiting on an appointment with someone else first. Some insurance plans still carry their own referral requirements for coverage. If you are not sure what yours says, ask us and we will help you read it.

Will insurance cover it? That depends on your plan. We are in network with Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Coventry, DMBA, EMI, PEHP, Tricare, TriWest, Wise/Imagine, Galaxy Health Network and Medicare, and we accept auto accident and worker's compensation claims. If your plan is not on that list, ask about our private pay rates and package options. The full carrier list lives on the insurance page.

No referral needed. Utah has direct access to physical therapy.
Every session is with a Doctor of Physical Therapy, start to finish
Plan on paying at the time of service

What to wear, what to bring, how to show up ready.

Two of the most common questions we get, answered in one place.

Comfortable, loose clothing you can move in and that does not restrict circulation
Special shoes or a brace, if your physical therapist has recommended them
Any paperwork from your doctor
X-rays, ultrasounds and any other imaging you have
Arrive rested, so you can give the session your full attention
Note any pain medication you took beforehand, so your therapist can adjust the intensity

What a session actually looks like.

Assessment

Every session starts with where you are today. Your Doctor of Physical Therapy assesses your condition and how you are moving before anything else happens.

Hands-On, Then Work

Manual techniques to improve mobility and flexibility, then individualized exercises and activities aimed at the goals you walked in with. Not a generic printed sheet.

Education

How to keep it from happening again: posture, body mechanics, and the everyday changes that hold the result in place after you are discharged.

The rest of it.

Timing, homework, pain during a session, and how this ends.

How long will my sessions last?

Plan on about an hour at the clinic for your first visit. Follow-up visits usually run around 45 minutes. Your physical therapist will tell you what to expect for yours when you arrive.

How often will I need to come in?

That comes out of your evaluation, not a formula. Frequency depends on your condition and the goals you set, and your physical therapist walks you through it at your first appointment.

Are there exercises I should do at home?

Almost always. You will be given stretches and exercises to do between visits, and doing them is a real part of how fast you progress. Check with your therapist before adding anything new to them.

What if I have questions after a session?

Your physical therapist is available before and after every visit, and you can call the clinic between visits. We would rather answer the question than have you guess at it.

Will my therapist explain my condition?

Yes, and you should ask. Understanding what happened and why is part of the treatment, not a bonus. Bring up anything that comes up as therapy goes on.

What if a session hurts too much?

Say so in the moment. Your therapist will adjust the intensity or change the technique. Treatment has to be tolerable to work, and pushing through in silence helps nobody.

How long until I see a difference?

Every person is different, so we will not hand you a date. Our program moves in four phases: reduce the pain, prevent the recurrence, prime the tissue, then perform. Your therapist tells you which phase you are in and what has to happen to reach the next one.

How will I know when I am done?

Your physical therapist tells you, based on your progress, your goals and your overall health. You leave when you can do the thing you came in wanting to do again, not when a visit count runs out.

Ask us directly.

Send it over and we will answer it. No referral needed in Utah, and most insurances are accepted.

Our front desk can also verify your physical therapy benefits before you ever book a visit.
