Deep heat, without a hand on you.
Therapeutic ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves you cannot hear. Your therapist applies a gel to the area, then moves a handheld transducer over it. The waves create gentle oscillation in the tissue underneath, which warms it from the inside out and widens the local blood vessels.
That is the whole mechanism: warmth and motion in tissue that a hand cannot reach as directly. It can loosen stiff muscle, ease discomfort, and make a guarded area easier to work with. It is a supporting tool inside a larger plan, not a treatment on its own, and your Doctor of Physical Therapy will tell you straight whether it is worth using in your case.
Short, simple, and part of a bigger session.
Target Area
Your Doctor of Physical Therapy picks the specific area based on your evaluation, most often a shoulder, knee or low back, then applies the gel that carries the sound waves into the tissue.
The Application
The transducer is moved over the area for the set duration. You may feel mild warmth. Many people feel nothing at all. There is no noise and no discomfort, and nothing is asked of you.
Then the Real Work
Ultrasound gets the tissue warm and workable. The rest of your appointment is hands-on treatment and exercise, which is where the change that lasts actually comes from.
